The Great Lobster Meat Shortage of 2021
Is the worst still to come?
In a story as old as the pandemic itself, a disruption in the supply chain has once again caused great disturbance in our lives. It started with toilet paper, then aluminum cans, ketchup packets and now frozen lobster meat. Here is the long story short, back in the summer of 2020 fewer lobstermen were heading out to trap lobsters. This coupled with less labor available to cook and pick meat subsequently led to less lobster meat being processed and frozen for future use. As the world began to normalize and demand began to increase the supply diminished far quicker than could have been predicted, and now there is virtually no lobster meat left until the new processing season begins in May. While the full extent of how the pandemic has changed our lives will be a story told by historians, this is one footnote we should all remember once we are back in prosperous times feeling fat on lobster rolls.

Lobster Meat

- This cannot be stressed enough- we do not have lobster meat. Due to a pandemic related labor shortage in the summer of 2020 not enough meat was picked to last until the 2021 processing season begins.
Cod and Ground Fish

- Supply of Wild Striped Bass has tightened as quotas have been met in Delaware. New areas will be opening in May.
Crab

- The Pasteurized Crab Meat market has been very tight and prices are expected to increase. The supply chain has suffered due to Covid- we are now seeing the increased global effect that it is having on transportation, labor and supply levels.
Tuna

- Fresh Tuna is almost nonexistent this week. Finding quality fish has been difficult and prices are on the rise.
